Medical Research Center for Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS)

The Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS), one of the largest birth cohorts to date enrolling more than 100,000 mother-child pairs, has been conducted nationwide since 2011. Our mission is to support the planning, implementation, and management of the JECS from a medical perspective.

Our missions

The JECS study-also known as the Ecochil survey-aims to investigate the most important aspects of child development by focusing on the environments in which children are brought up. After initial planning by the Ministry of the Environment, recruitment for the survey commenced in 2011, and focused on particular birth cohorts.

The study recruited 100,000 pregnant women over the course of three years in 15 unit centers based at universities and their affiliated hospitals all over Japan. We are now undertaking the most important part of the survey by following-up participants, whereby we track the health of participating children from the intrauterine period up until the age of 13 years.

The National Institute for Environmental Studies (Core Center) plays a central role in administering the survey and is supported by the Medical Support Center, which provides medical expertise in the investigation of the health statuses of mothers and their children.

The survey is being carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. Moreover, the project supports co-operation with international agencies and the use of data from overseas research institutes.

From 2022, a large scale genetic study of JECS, by genotyping 85,000 children, will begin to improve child health and development typically for those who belong to a genetically vulnerable group to specific environmental contaminants.
