Division for Advanced Medical Sciences
The mission is to improve current therapeutics and to develop novel medical technology. Toward the goal, preclinical and clinical research is set based on scientific and ethical point of view. At present, two projects are in progress; 1. hepatocyte transplantation, 2. construction of system for research use of human-origin research materials (human tissue bank).
Liver transplantation is a successful treatment for the end stage of severe liver failure. At National Center for Child Health and Development, 30 to 40 liver transplantation are performed annually. As an alternative treatment, less invasive hepatocellular transplantation is hoped especially in infantile cases. Establishment of optimal protocol by preclinical animal experiment and improvement of efficient isolation and storage of hepatocytes are being conducted.
Human origin materials are indispensable for medical research including drug development. At the same time, the privacy and autonomy of tissue donor should be respected. The system compatible with both ethics and scientific value is constructed. So far, human tonsil tissue collection has been established in collaboration with Health Science Research Resource Bank.
